Start with the operating model
A security operations centre (SOC) combines people, processes and technology to monitor security events and coordinate investigations. A managed SOC adds an external provider to that operating model. Buying a monitoring tool alone does not establish who can investigate or authorize containment.

NCA publishes a licensing framework and a national policy for managed SOC services. Verify the provider’s current licence and permitted scope through NCA; do not treat a commercial registration or a certification logo as equivalent. Have your security and legal owners determine which requirements apply to your organization and contract.
NCA — Registration and licensingConnect monitoring to response
NIST’s incident-response guidance places preparation, detection, response and recovery within wider risk management. Your service agreement should explain the handover from an alert to a decision: who is on call, what evidence is preserved, and who may isolate a system. Our practical recommendation is to rehearse that handover with a tabletop exercise before relying on it.
NIST — Incident response, SP 800-61 Rev. 3Ask for evidence, not a busy dashboard
As a procurement checklist, ask which systems are covered, how gaps are reported and how alerts are tuned. Agree how response times are measured, including when the clock starts and what depends on your team. Request a sample investigation report and an explanation of data location, access permissions, retention and subcontractors. These questions help define a useful contract; they are not a certification checklist.
Keep the wider controls in view
NCA’s Essential Cybersecurity Controls are a broader reference than monitoring alone. Review the applicable controls with your security owner. A SOC does not replace secure configuration, patching, access management or recovery planning, and no provider can honestly promise that every incident will be prevented.
